Paris: Week Four, Day Five

Thursday, July 20

Today, it was time to focus on studying French again. The final test is coming up very soon and I’m so worried about it. Class is sometimes easy and sometimes difficult so I know I still need work. I started listening to true crime podcasts in French. Interesting! And, I listened to the news about the submarine that imploded in French. Surprisingly, I could understand most of what they spoke about.

After class today, I went looking for more salmon! Yes, it’s my favorite fish. Instead, I went to a nearby restaurant and ordered food I totally didn’t want at all. I ordered scallops by accident. I was thinking scalloped potatoes, not scallops. I don’t like scallops because of the fishy taste and grainy texture. It’s like eating a salty marshmallow or something. I ate them anyway though.

Then I had a truffle risotto with ham. I don’t understand the French obsession with serving risotto with ham. I don’t like ham. I love risotto though. I knew I wouldn’t like this dish but I ordered it anyway. Big mistake. The truffle flavor was too strong. And there was too much ham. I ended up not eating most of it. Plus, the “risotto” was actually just elbow macaroni. The whole thing was odd.

For dessert, I ordered a Rum Baba. It was my first time trying this dessert. I thought that they would serve this sweet bread that had been cooked in rum. But, no. They brought out this dish of bread with a giant wad of whipped cream in the middle. Then, the waiter brough a bottle of rum to the table and began to liberally pour it onto the plate and the bread! I was so confused as to what was happening. I didn’t know I was getting pure rum like that. I ate it anyway. Surprisingly, it was delicious. The rum was much better than things I’ve gotten in France that are rum flavored. I much prefer the actual drink to the flavoring. It gave the dessert a little kick that burned in the back of my throat. It was a gentle burn though. I didn’t get hazy in my head like when I drank the lemoncello. I would definitely have that desert again if I got the opportunity.

I finished my meal and then headed back home for more study.
