City of Hopewell Internship with the Department of Economic Development

This internship, done in partnership with the University of Maryland and the City of Hopewell, places KP as the lead researcher on a community engagement project having two parts: (1) assist a local group with digitizing and publishing a 700-page book on Hopewell’s African American history; (2) determine the location of an African American burial ground and identify those interred there. As a graduation requirement for the Master’s Degree of Professional Studies in Cultural and Heritage Resource Management, KP began this internship in June of 2025. Originally set to end in August, the internship was extended by the City until the end of October. The project, named the Berry Street Burial Ground Project, is still underway.

There are several parts of the burial ground research: deed research to determine land ownership and potential times of use for the burial ground, archival research to support community memory of the burial ground, public outreach to spread the news of the Berry Street Burial Ground Project and gather community input, genealogical research to connect descendants and their ancestors, community collaboration to gather information and determine needed steps in the project, and archaeological investigations to identify boundaries of the burial ground.
